A black coat leaves plenty of room for individuality. These three artists introduce cats who want our attention, hold our gaze or keep themselves hidden. Acrylic and pastel offer different routes into those personalities, giving black-cat admirers several reasons to linger.
Whiskers by Sara Butt S.O.F.A.
Those green eyes make quite an introduction. In “Whiskers”, Sara Butt S.O.F.A. brings us face to face with a beautiful black cat whose steady gaze seems to hold our attention as easily as any feline request for supper.
Fine whiskers stand out against the dark coat, while subtle variations in the fur give the face softness and shape. It’s the sort of portrait that invites you to lean a little closer, enjoying the small details that turn a familiar subject into an individual.
Could Whiskers be the face you’d enjoy coming home to? 🐾

The Attention Seeker by Patricia Mooney S.O.F.A.
Minou has a more direct plan for claiming the artist’s time. That book can wait. The glass of wine isn’t going anywhere. There’s a cat who needs attention, and surely that takes priority?
Patricia Mooney S.O.F.A. met this affectionate character while visiting a friend on holiday. Minou promptly adopted her visitor, making sure that quiet afternoons reading in the garden included plenty of time devoted to her.
A familiar face for anyone whose cat considers an unoccupied hand a missed opportunity. 🐾

Flash by Denise Laurent S.O.F.A.
Something has caught her eye, and everything else can wait. A moth? A feather? She knows. We’re left to guess.
Black fur becomes a whole conversation in colour in “Flash” by Denise Laurent S.O.F.A. Red, pink, purple and blue run through her coat, while copper whiskers catch the light. Her upward gaze gives us a glimpse of that wonderfully feline moment of complete concentration.
Painted on handmade paper with four natural deckled edges, she’s a portrait for anyone who knows that a black cat is never simply black.

Me And My Shadow by Rachel Massie
Black fur is full of colour when you look closely.
In “me and my shadow” by Rachel Massie, blue-violet tones help describe Beans’s coat, while his shadow stretches over the pale floor.
For black-cat admirers, there are lovely contrasts to enjoy. Spend a moment with Rachel’s watercolour in our online exhibition.
