Some cats disappear as soon as someone wants a photograph. Fudge, it seems, understands the value of a willing sitter. Fudge by Avril Sleeman S.O.F.A. introduces a friend’s tabby who is always ready to pose, with fifteen years of experience at being himself.

Avril makes a point of saying that it is the cat who enjoys posing, rather than the friend. That affectionate little joke gives us a lovely introduction to the individual behind the image. This is a familiar companion given the attention of a portrait, rather than a cat chosen simply for its markings.
The work is an original etching on paper, produced in an edition of twenty and supplied mounted. Its small format encourages a close look at the face and the lines that describe it.
For someone with a soft spot for older cats, Fudge offers the pleasure of meeting a character whose appeal has had time to develop. Fifteen years young, and still quite prepared to be the centre of attention.
