Miss Stripes Takes A Stroll: best stripes on, tail held high

Some cats can turn a walk across the room into a small parade. Miss Stripes Takes A Stroll by Denise Laurent S.O.F.A. celebrates just that sort of confidence: a tabby stepping out with an extravagantly curved tail and a coat full of orange, blue, green and pink.

The patterns develop as watercolour moves through wet handmade paper. Colour sinks in, spreads and softens as it dries, allowing the stripes to mingle rather than stay neatly within their boundaries. That freedom gives the cat’s familiar shape a lively, expressive character.

The paper has four natural deckled edges, which are part of the handmade surface. They suit a painting in which movement and the behaviour of the paint are so much of the pleasure. At approximately A2, this original gives those flowing colours room to be enjoyed.

Where is she off to? Wherever it is, she seems perfectly happy to arrive in her own time, wearing her very best stripes.
