Big paw. Tongue out. Very little concern for looking dignified. Innocence by France Bauduin S.O.F.A. introduces a snow leopard cub in a moment that is full of the appeal of being young. For all the fascination of a wild cat, it is the small, individual gesture that makes us stop.

France combines coloured pencils and PanPastels on Pastelmat. The fine markings and soft fur give us plenty to explore, while the lifted paw and curling tongue bring a playful immediacy to the portrait. This is a youngster absorbed in its own moment, rather than posing for our benefit.
There is something lovely about wildlife art that allows an animal to be an individual. Here, the cub’s expression and gesture tell the story without needing a grand setting. For a big-cat admirer, it offers a gentler encounter to spend time with, and perhaps a face that will make you smile each time you return to it.
