Poised: remembering the individual behind a cheetah’s speed

Before movement, there is a pause. Poised by Lucy d’Auvergne grew from a memory of Kike, a wild cheetah the artist filmed in Kenya some twenty years ago. Time spent observing her left an interest in the individual who existed between the moments of action.

Lucy wanted to return to that quiet presence. The resulting sculpture asks us to meet Kike as herself, with attention to stillness and character rather than a display of speed. It is a thoughtful starting point for a portrait of an animal so often associated with movement.

Cast slate, raw Earth pigments and a granite base give the work a physical presence of its own. The sculpture measures 38 centimetres high, offering a three-dimensional encounter that changes as we move around it.

Some subjects stay with an artist for years. Here, a brief experience of watching a cheetah has become a lasting invitation to look more patiently at an individual life.
