This is a painting of my adorable British Shorthair Blue Cream cat, Chintz.
I’ve captured one of her typical relaxed poses in this painting; I couldn’t resist her beautiful expression and the warm tones of light and dark on her fur. She adores reclining in this comfy armchair with a little support from the soft cushion behind. The sunshine streams in from the bay window behind the chair and illuminates Chintz’s whole body as she performs her washes, and snoozes the afternoon away.
I am particularly enthusiastic about portraying light on fur and seek it out whenever I can. The dramatic changes of tone when you have strong sunlight and shadow are always exciting to paint. I also love the subtly of hues in the shaded areas of fur and delight in the challenge to portray them in a lifelike manner.
The warm sunlight is creating a spotlight effect on Chintz’s head. I adore the way the light is just catching her long whiskers and illuminating her little pink ears.
My little cat is such a charismatic character and has been a wonderful muse over the years.
